Have you ever had a massage that just sets everything right again?
With all of the to-do's on my list before leaving, I knew self-care was still of utmost priority. Steve wasn't sure that I'd be able to pull everything off, and still be gone for a few hours last night. But, it looks like we are right on schedule to depart around 10 am.
If you could only hear me squeal with excitement!
But, back to this amazing massage last night.
I had been running errands all day, checking list off of the list, rockin' and rollin' myself right into a place ready to hit the road.
I was also about ready to hit a wall of exhaustion.
And, let's be honest, when you're that tired, it's super hard to stay focused on the task at hand.
My whole body began to melt instantly as the warmth of the room enveloped my cold body. The dim lights softened my mood, and I was ready to get my zen-on!
The massage started like usual.. I was asked, "which parts of the body need extra attention today?"
To which I replied, the external rotators of my left shoulder and the area where my lateral hamstring and IT band connect. Yes, I like to be very specific.
I was able to breath and relax.
When she hit a sore spot, I could let go some more with each exhalation into the pressure.
The time with my face down flew by, and when I turned over, she started with my neck.
This is, apparently, where all of my stress about this transition has been held.
She did a few familiar moves, releasing the scalene muscles, and the upper traps. Then, she tried something new. She used her forearms to almost rock my neck side to side, almost forcing me to let all of the weight of my dome rest in her arms.
I started balling.
Seriously, tears started rolling down my checks.
The loud and clear message in this: trust that everything is going to be okay. Know that you will receive the desires of your heart.
It was a message I not only heard in my head, but felt in my heart and every cell of my body. I could let go of any worry and uncertainty of the upcoming trip.
The next 2,976 miles driving to Florida? No problem.
The next several months in a new place, making new friends. Easy-peasy.
I was reminded to just relax, and know that all is well.
It was a poignant way for me to close up the week where the focus has been on body wisdom.
My body clearly pointed that out in this massage. But, I also learned a few other things over the course of the week:
- I do better without my double shot of espresso in the morning. I eat more regularly, and am less jittery throughout the day.
- By doing just 15 minutes or so of stretching before bed, my mind was more calm and I was able to fall asleep more quickly.
- Without drinking alcohol at happy hour, my energy levels were more consistent throughout the evening.
- By meditating in the morning, I had a clear focus for my day. I was able to prioritize my actions before work more effectively, and be in a great mood leaving the house.
- By taking care of my body, my mind could really be more present in everything I'm doing.
These are many things I've already discovered in the past. However, it's really nice to see the positive affects of the conscious choices made on a daily basis.
And, I can take these insights with me as I travel to visit my family.
Yes, I'll get to do yoga at some new studios, and take Kai for walks by the beach. Mostly, though, I'm looking forward to sharing the gift of my attention with them... of giving them my undivided focus and love. I cherish the times we are together, as we do live many miles, many apart for most of the year. My body can relax into this time, my mind can be at ease, and my heart can be wide-open to receive the joy of the season.
I wish a very Merry Christmas to you and yours!
See you next week from sunny, south Florida!!!
